Diversity and Ethnic Minority Work
Implementation of the Black and Minority Ethnic Strategy for Learning
Disabilities
Background:
In 2001 the Department of Health published a document called
Learning Difficulties and Ethnicity. This report highlighted
that people with Learning Difficulties and their families from
minority ethnic communities are amongst the most disadvantaged
groups in our society.
Despite often having very high support needs, services are less
likely to be offered or taken up. In addition, service providers
often do not take into account peoples ethnicity, culture
or religion and so the services that are offered are not appropriate.
Leeds Partnership Board:
The Partnership Board decided to employ a Diversity Director
as the person to be responsible for putting into practice what
was stated in the report written by the Valuing People Support
Team.
People in Action host my post and I am based at their offices.
My role as the Diversity Director means I will support the Learning
Disability Partnership Board and its Partners in planning and
improving existing Learning Disability Services for Black Minority
Ethnic communities by using the guidance and recommendations on
the Valuing People 2004 Ethnicity and Learning Difficulties Framework
for Action.
Future actions
In the next few weeks I will be busy meeting and networking with
the Leeds Partnership board members and its Partners to set up
an Ethnicity Sub Group. This will have people with Learning Difficulties
and their Carers from Black Minority Ethnic Communities in it.
The Ethnicity Sub Group will support me in developing and delivering
the Valuing People Ethnicity and Learning Difficulties Action
Plan.
If you would like further information on Ethnicity and Learning
Difficulties or would like to get involved please contact Kashif
Ahmed on 0113 247 0411.
